TYPE 401 AUDIO/VIDEO VERIFIER

Many modern network control and monitoring installations are required to handle a large number of video and audio channels with minimal operating staff. Under these conditions it is often difficult to consistently verify the integrity of all channels manually.

Verifier rackThe Type 401 Video/Audio Verifier was designed for Drake Automation Ltd. (now part of Harris Corp.) to overcome this problem by providing continuous automatic monitoring for abnormal signal conditions. Up to sixteen Verifiers can be housed in a single 3-U rack-frame, each module taking one composite analogue video and four analogue audio feeds. A 3-U rack frame with three modules fitted is pictured. It can provide the following separate and configurable alarms.

THE 401 VERIFIER WILL DETECT:

  • Video picture-freeze
  • Video black
  • Loss of Sync
  • Audio 1 silence
  • Audio 2 silence
  • Audio 3 silence
  • Audio 4 silence

Detection Criteria

When it comes to detecting frozen images, you’ll need different detection criteria for a caption-based information service than for a movie channel. Similarly, audio silence detection parameters for a classical music service will most likely need to be different to those for a speech-based service, or a pop-music channel. The Type 401 detection parameters may be dynamically user-configured via an RS-485 serial port. The frame also houses a PSU and a controller card. This acts as an alarm concentrator and configuration interface for the rack-frame, and also provides the user serial port for external connection to an SNMP Agent, such as the Type 101 Agent, or a control GUI. There is also a front-panel mounted RS-232 test and configuration port.

Packaging

The 401 system consists of a 3-U self-powered rack-frame, which can house up to 16 cards. This means that a single frame may monitor a total of 16 video and 64 audio channels. For serial communication purposes each card in a frame is individually addressable. Also up to 16 frames may be daisy-chained, each frame having its own unique address, set from a DIP selector switch on the controller card.
