TYPE 218 WIDE-SCREEN SIGNALLING (WSS) INSERTER

If you need to record or transmit composite video material, originated in 16:9 anamorphic (full screen) format, but from a source such as a computer or player that doesn't flag it as wide-screen, then you need the 218. For more information about TV wide-screen modes, click here.

The Type 218 WSS Inserter is a 1-U rack-mounting unit, designed specifically to generate and insert the Wide-Screen-Signalling ident signal on Line 23 either for recording, or the transmission of WS status through any video path that does not permit the SCART Pin 8 DC switching method to be used. It takes either a standard SCART input, or a composite input on a BNC connector. When using the BNC composite or SCART inputs, the unit can be internally set to insert the required WSS, or this can be selected externally via a remote control (GPI) connector. When using the SCART input the unit can also be set to insert the Line 23 WSS automatically from the DC state of pin 8, the select pin. The output is available on either a second SCART output connector, or on a BNC socket (not simultaneously). The output SCART is fully wired to the input SCART, enabling use with Y/C and RGB signals, and allowing audio signals to be passed through. The WSS signal inserted can be either the 4:3 flag, the 16:9 anamorphic "full screen" flag, or the "16:9 picture letterboxed into a 4:3 frame" flag. The latter causes a compatible wide-screen TV to "zoom" the letterboxed area to fill the screen.

SPECIFICATION

INPUTS:

Composite Video: 1V p-p composite PAL into 75R (self-terminating), on a BNC connector.

SCART: Video and stereo audio on a standard SCART connector, from a wide-screen source such as a Set-Top-Box or DVD player. CVBS, Y/C and RGB modes are supported. If the source uses Pin 8 DC wide-screen signalling then this can be used to control WSS Line 23 insertion.

Note: Signals must not be fed to both input connectors simultaneously.

OUTPUTS:

Composite Video: 1V p-p composite PAL into 75R, from a BNC connector.

SCART: Video and stereo audio on a standard SCART connector with the WSS signal inserted on Line 23 as required. The input and output SCART connectors are fully wired, and thus support both RGB and S-Video signal formats, as well as composite video (CVBS).

Note: Simultaneous use of both output connectors is not supported.

REMOTE CONTROL:

Ground-loop GPI remote control of all functions via a 9-way D socket.

POWER:

200 - 240VAC 50/60Hz on a standard, switched IEC connector. Front panel power indicator.

DIMENSIONS:

1RU x 150mm (less connectors).
